al-nafal (pI. al-anafal)

Booty, spoil. Teeh: In a broad sense it covers the ghanimah and the fai, but in its narrower sense it is a share of the booty given to the warrior for performing an excellent job on the battlefield. It is additional to his regular share in the booty that is given for specific duties on the battlefield.

al-najash

al-najiz

Entire, complete. Tech: Relating to the commercial law, it refers to a transaction for ready cash.

al-naqd

Gold and silver in the form of coins.

al-naqdain

Two currencies. Tech: Gold and silver or dinar and dirham used as currencies. Also called al-nuqud.

al-naql

Transfer or transportation of a property from one place to another with the intention of giving the possession to the other party.

al-naqqal

A person employed to transport or carry the goods collected as zakat. He is included in the category of amilin and is paid out of the zakat funds.

al-nashsh

Half of anything. Tech: A weight equivalent to half uqiyah, 20 dirhams or 59.5 grams.

nasiib al-mithl

Similar share. Tech: In relation to an agreement of partnership, such as shirkah, mudarabah, muzarah, musaqah, etc., it is the share of the parties to agreement in the profit, in case the original agreement turns fasid for any reason. In such cases each one is given nasib al-mithl: the familiar share or the share which is known and acceptable in similar cases in the society.

al-naa'uurah

al-nawaadih

Relating to the law of zakat, it refers to camels which irrigate land. Half-ushr is usually payable on the produce of the land worked by al-nawadih.

al-nawaah

Date pit, stone of a date. Tech: A weight equivalent to 5 dirhams or 14.875 grams.

al-nawaa'ib

Calamity, misfortune. Tech: Those taxes which are imposed to meet any emergency due to some misfortune or natural calamity. Also used for irregular levies of Muslim states imposed collectively on the people anywhere. Jurists opposed these levies, but they were in vogue during mediaeval Islam.

naazir al-awqaf

Administrator of an endowment or trust.

naazir al-sikkah

A fourteenth century Spanish institution. The nazir al-sikkah was an officer in the mint responsible for supervising the quality of the coins minted. This office was usually filled by jurists.

naazir al-suuq

An alternate term for al-muhtasib prevalent in North Africa during the third century of hijra. See al-muhtasib.

al-naazirah

Postponement of debt at the request of the debtor who is facing difficulty in repayment at the due date. Along with qard hasan, it is an important element of the riba-free credit structure.

al-nisaab

Exemption limit for the payment of zakat. It is diffe_ent for different types of wealth.

nizaam al-misahah

Relating to the administration of land revenue, the system pf levying kharaj on the basis of area cultivated irrespective of the produce. This system remained in vogue from the times of the first four caliphs to the times of the Abbaside caliph Mehdi who changed it to nizam al-muqasamah, i.e., the system of tax on the basis of the produce.

nizaam al-muqaasamah

Relating to the administration of land revenue, the system of levying kharaj on the basis of the produce of land. This was adopted by the Abbaside caliph Mehdi. The system of land revenue on ushri lands was also that of muqasmah.
