Pollen counts vary by the time of day. Plan your outdoor activities
later in the day. Pollen counts are also generally lower during and right
after rain falls or on cool, cloudy days.
To reduce pollen exposure during high pollen season:
Plan a vacation to a place with low pollen counts, such as the beach
or the mountains,
Do not dry clothing and bedding outside on a clothesline where pollen
can stick to them,
Wash your hair before going to bed during the pollen season. This removes
any pollen that may have accumulated in your hair during the day so that
you will not be in contact with it while you sleep.
If you are allergic to pollen, and have a pet, it is best to keep him/her
either inside or outside during high pollen season, as opposed to letting
them go in and out periodically. Pollen can stick to animal fur and it
can easily hitch a ride into your house.
To reduce irritation during the pollen season, do not wear contact lenses.
Pollen grains can become trapped underneath lenses. Eyeglasses may be a
better choice.
When ordering a drink during the allergy season, remember that alcohol
stimulates mucus production and dilates vessels, worsening a runny nose
and nasal congestion.
To reduce nasal congestion without the use of medication, sleep with
your head slightly elevated.
Talk to your doctor about proper allergy treatment. Remember to fill
prescriptions and allergy medications before leaving on vacation.
